A good cover on a clean car protects paint. Scratches usually come from dirt trapped under the cover, a poor fit that lets the cover move in wind, or a rough inner surface.
What causes scratches
| Cause | How to prevent it |
|---|---|
| Dust and grit on the car | Wash or at least rinse the car before covering it |
| Cover flapping in wind | Use a fitted cover with straps or an underbody strap |
| Dragging the cover across the paint | Roll it on and off from front to back instead of pulling |
| Dirty inside of the cover | Keep the inside clean; wash the cover as the maker allows |
| Rough or plastic-only material | Choose a cover with a soft inner lining |
| Moisture trapped under the cover | Pick a breathable fabric for outdoor use |
Putting the cover on
- Make sure the car is clean and dry.
- Fold in or account for mirrors and antenna.
- Unroll the cover from front to back.
- Secure the straps so it cannot shift.
New or freshly painted cars
Ask your body shop or dealer how long to wait before covering new paint, and follow their advice.
