Regular car covers do little against hail. Hail covers add padding or air chambers to absorb impact. They can reduce damage from small to moderate hail, but no cover can promise to stop large hailstones.
Hail protection options
| Option | How it works | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Padded hail cover | Foam layer on top surfaces | Heavier and bulkier to store |
| Inflatable hail cover | Air chambers inflated by a pump | Needs power and setup time before a storm |
| Thick multi-layer cover | Extra fabric layers | Helps with very small hail only |
| Garage, carport or covered parking | Physical roof | Most reliable protection |
Before a storm
- Watch local forecasts and put the cover on early; wind arrives before hail.
- Secure every strap.
- Check your auto insurance: comprehensive coverage typically handles hail, but confirm your policy.
Fit
Fit matters more than almost anything else. A loose cover flaps in wind and can scuff paint; a too-tight cover strains seams. Use the maker's fit lookup by year, make and model, or measure bumper to bumper, mirror to mirror and roof height. Always put a cover on a clean, dry vehicle: grit trapped under a cover can scratch paint.
