A car cover is worth it when your car sits outside or for long stretches and a cover keeps something off it that would cost more to fix than the cover costs. It is less useful for a car you drive every day in a clean garage.
When a cover helps most
| Situation | Why a cover helps |
|---|---|
| Parked outdoors in strong sun | Shades paint, trim and dashboard from UV and heat |
| Under trees | Keeps off sap, bird droppings and leaves, which can stain paint if left on |
| Snow and ice | Less scraping in the morning; see car covers for snow |
| Hail-prone areas | Padded hail covers can reduce small dents; see hail covers |
| Stored car in a garage | A soft indoor cover keeps off dust and accidental scratches |
When a cover may not be worth it
- You drive daily and would rarely put it on.
- Windy sites where a loose cover flaps against the paint.
- Putting a cover on a dirty car, which can scratch the finish. See do car covers scratch paint?
- Cheap non-breathable plastic covers, which can trap moisture.
What to look for
- Fit: custom or semi-custom for your make and model
- Breathable, water-resistant fabric for outdoor use
- Soft inner lining
- Straps or a cable lock for wind
