SUVs are taller and boxier than sedans, so a generic car cover often won't fit. Roof racks, spare tires and mirror size all affect fit.
Fit types compared
| Fit type | How it fits | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Custom fit | Patterned to your exact model, often with mirror pockets | Usually costs more |
| Semi-custom | Sized for a range of similar vehicles | Some slack; straps help |
| Universal (S, M, L, XL) | Sized by length | Most likely to flap or bunch |
SUV-specific checks
- Does the cover allow for a roof rack or rails?
- Rear-mounted spare tire: look for a matching cutout or extra room.
- Antenna: fixed antennas may need a patch or grommet kit.
- Height: a cover with a zipper door panel lets you open the driver's door without removing it.
Fit
Fit matters more than almost anything else. A loose cover flaps in wind and can scuff paint; a too-tight cover strains seams. Use the maker's fit lookup by year, make and model, or measure bumper to bumper, mirror to mirror and roof height. Always put a cover on a clean, dry vehicle: grit trapped under a cover can scratch paint.
