A good boat cover keeps out rain, sun, leaves and animals, and helps prevent water from pooling in the boat while it's stored or trailered.
Types of boat covers
| Type | Use | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Trailerable cover | Storage and towing on a trailer | Needs secure straps rated for highway speed |
| Mooring cover | Boat in the water at a slip | Fits around the hull above the waterline |
| Custom-fit | Made for your boat's make and model | Best fit, usually higher cost |
| Semi-custom or universal | Sized by boat type, length and beam | Cheaper; check the length and beam range |
Fabrics
- Solution-dyed acrylic and polyester are common outdoor boat fabrics; compare the maker's water resistance and UV claims.
- Breathability matters to limit mildew.
Measuring
Measure centerline length from the bow tip to the transom (not including swim platforms or motors unless the maker says to) and the beam (widest point). Note any T-top, windshield or trolling motor.
Prevent pooling
Use support poles or a support system so rainwater runs off instead of pooling, which can stretch or tear the cover.
